Pub Note:
Unusual reduced contemporary photocopy of a manuscript map. Photographic copying was a quicker way for the government to get map copies into the field, instead of having a lithographed copy made (see Stephenson p. 5-6). These photo maps are between lithographed and manuscript maps in character, and very scarce. Mounted on linen with ms label with the title, "Map of Part of the North Bank of the Rappahannock River... December 1862." This map and fifty other maps were the collection of Edwin T. Cowell and came from the estate of one of his descendants who died in Massachusetts. Cowell was a Sergeant in the Signal Corps at the Headquarters of Maj. Gen. W.S. Rosecrans, Army of the Cumberland. These maps cover the campaigns of the Army of the Cumberland, as well as other campaigns. Cowell probably put the maps together toward the end of the war and up to 1869 (the latest date on any of the maps).
