The republic of Chile is shown by a sailing ship rounding Cape Horn and workers mining a nitre (niter) bed of potassium nitrate (saltpeter). Denmark with its limited monarchy is illustrated with a dockside scene of shipping cattle. Peru, a republic, shows natives stripping bark and harvesting of a guano deposit. Turkey, a case of absolute despotism, is noted for its carpets, and style of male dress in the Ottoman Empire
