Note:
The first edition was 1844. Editions were issued almost yearly to 1857, although Karpinski does not record this 1853 issue. The "23rd edition" has "no significance as to actual editions" according to Karpinski. This copy is trimmed close on the western side and has no neat line on that side, which appears to be original(see our (1866) issue which is trimmed in the same manner), although Karpinski's width is two inches more on this side. The amount of detail that Farmer has put in this map is impressive. Farmer made maps of the Michigan area from 1824 to 1835, when he sold his copyrights to Colton. The first edition of this 1853 map represents his reentry into the map field. Karpinski: "In 1844 he brought out an entirely new map of the State of Michigan, which he engraved himself, and which represented a large amount of careful, conscientious work, and passed through many editions." The outline color map is folded into ornately stamped black leather covers 14.5x9 with "Farmer's Map Of Michigan Exhibiting The Sections" in gilt.
