The map, in outline color and measuring 40x50, is from a discarded plate of H. Phelps' U.S. (see our #2442) The index is largely stolen from Mitchell's Travellers Guide index sheet for 1832, however the information on roads and distances is taken from someone else. Phelps' name can be seen through the erasure on the map plate. The map has the characteristic oval portrait of Washington, reengraved (clumsily) from the Phelps issue. Webster put this together from Phelps, Mitchell and (?) and it is very scarce - we can find no references to it. It was probably a one shot issue. Map and guide fold into a green quarter leather booklet, which slips into a green cloth covered case. Title on front and back of booklet.
