Asazumabune no sankyoku (Playing three instruments on a pleasure boat)
Description
The triptych depicts 光君 (Hikaru no kimi, Prince Genji from the novel Genji monogatari 源氏物語) riding on a pleasure boat where music is played. Here he takes a boat trip on a lake that belongs to his magnificent villa. “Asazumabune” (浅妻船) is a reference to ferry boats on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa, where geisha and sex workers entertained travelers. Standing is a woman who takes on the role of boatswain and steers the boat with a long pole. Her blue kimono is decorated with various Genji chapter characters. Seated in front of her is an elegantly dressed woman holding drumsticks.
